French is more than another language. For eligible candidates, strong French can create additional ways to pursue Canadian permanent residence, work opportunities, education and long-term career growth.
Eligible Express Entry candidates with NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities may qualify for French-language category-based rounds. NCLC 7 in all four French abilities may also add 25 or 50 CRS or more points, depending on the candidate’s English results. Meeting the French threshold does not itself guarantee an invitation or permanent residence.
Francophone Mobility may allow an eligible worker with a qualifying job offer outside Quebec to apply for an employer-specific, LMIA-exempt work permit. French speaking and listening must generally be at NCLC 5 or higher, and the employer and applicant must meet the other requirements.
The Francophone Community Immigration Pilot offers a permanent-residence route for eligible skilled workers with a qualifying job offer in a participating community. Its minimum French threshold is NCLC 5 in all four abilities.
French can broaden access to French-language and bilingual programmes and may support applications for scholarships or institutional funding for which the learner independently qualifies.
Bilingual communication can expand professional and mobility options in Canada and internationally, even when immigration is not the learner’s immediate goal.
